Rock finish off road trip with another victory

ELLIOT LAKE, Ont. – The Timmins Rock capped off a successful three-game Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League road trip Sunday evening as they defeated the Elliot Lake Wildcats 6-4 at Centennial Arena.

Timmins, who began the weekend with a 4-2 triumph at Espanola Friday before winning 6-2 at Rayside-Balfour Saturday, got things going in Elliot Lake by striking three times in less than four minutes in the opening period to take early control.

Cole Gilligan’s 21st started the offensive outburst at 14:54 during a power play.

Bain Cunningham then struck shorthanded at 17:34 while teammate Tyler Romain picked up his 26th of the season a minute later.

The visitors added to their cushion moments into the middle stanza as Wayne Mathieu converted on a man advantage opportunity 34 seconds into the session.

Brett Crook got the Wildcats on the board at 7:32 as he collected his 10th tally of the campaign.

Jacob Kelly brought Elliot Lake to within two with a power play marker at 16:12, but the Rock came right back as Jordan Rendle connected 51 seconds later to put them up 5-2 after two.

Rendle then added his second of the night and 27th overall seven and a half minutes into the third.

Kelly scored again for the Wildcats 20 seconds after that before William Bucsis rounded out the scoring for the home side with 3:53 to go.

Maxime Lague and Dean Kiriacou had two assists each for the Rock while Brennan Kelly had three for Elliot Lake.

Al Rogers made 36 saves to record the win for Timmins.

Matt Kostiw started for the Wildcats and allowed four against on 15 attempts while Justin Richer suffered the loss in nearly two periods of relief facing 15 shots along the way.
