Rock strike twice late to upend Gold Miners

KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – A Jacob Shankar marker with 3:51 remaining was the game-winner as the Timmins Rock upended the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 5-3 Friday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

Timmins went in front with the lone tally of the opening frame when Alexandre Brisson notched his second of the season at 17:30.

Cory Sprague’s seventh added to the visitor’s cushion 3:52 into the middle stanza before Kirkland Lake countered eight minutes later compliments of Taylor Urch’s second NOJHL goal.

The Rock answered that however at 13:40 on a Tyler Romain effort.

Special teams allowed the Gold Miners to pull closer before the session was complete when Stavros Soilis connected on the power play at 16:19.

Blake Cudmore then tied it for the home side just past the four-minute mark to knot the affair at 3-3.

Shankar then picked up the eventual difference maker late in the third before Cole Gilligan iced it with an empty net effort with 42 seconds to go to round out the scoring on the night.

Tyler Fyfe had two assists in defeat for Kirkland Lake.

Shots on goal favoured the Rock with 31-28 as Caleb Barris picked up the win and Victor-Olivier Courchesne suffered the loss.
