Round 1 Playoff Preview: Series B – No. 3 Sudbury Nickel Barons vs. No. 6 Elliot Lake Bobcats

SUDBURY — The following is a preview of the round 1 Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League playoff series between the No. 3 Sudbury Nickel Barons and the No. 6 Elliot Lake Bobcats.

The final opening round postseason match-up kicks off Saturday at McClelland Arena in Copper Cliff as the Nickel Barons entertain the Bobcats, who will be taking to the ice in their first-ever playoff game in the NOJHL.

Sudbury will have home ice for the opener as well as game 3 and if necessary games 5 and 7.

Elliot Lake meanwhile will be the home side at Centennial Arena for the second and fourth contests of the series along with a sixth game, should it be necessary.

Puck drop for each game in the series is slated for 7:30 p.m.

Sudbury claimed the season series between the two sides winning six of eight meetings outscoring the Bobcats by a 43-25 margin.

While the Nickel Barons won’t having NOJHL leading scorer Sebastien Leroux in their line-up due to a wrist injury, the club still has another talented forward in Darcy Haines at their disposal.

Haines and Leroux led the club in offensive numbers vs. the Bobcats with 14 points apiece. Among his totals, Haines netted a pair of game-winners and assisted on another against Elliot Lake.

August Jarecki also reached double digits for his squad scoring five times while dishing out six helpers.

Michael Muzyka posted a 4-1 record against Elliot Lake in five starts with Alex Laino going 2-1 between the pipes for the Barons.

Stephen Gaul and Brad Holman shared the team scoring lead for the Cats against the Barons accumulating eight points each while John Follmer and Kyle Rowe both added seven.

Brian Hennessey, who despite only suiting up for 20 regular season contests for Elliot Lake, registered 35 points overall, including six vs. Sudbury.

Cory Simic notched both victories in net for the Bobcats over Sudbury in league play.

As this marks the Bobcats opening year in the NOJHL it also means this will be the first-ever playoff meeting against the Nickel Barons.
