Savard shines as Canadians blank Gold Miners

CHELMSFORD, Ont. – MacKenzie Savard turned in a solid performance, stopping all 35 shots he faced to post his first Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League shutout as the Rayside-Balfour Canadians blanked the visiting Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 2-0 Saturday at Chelmsford Arena.

Joel Lemay provided the only tally Rayside-Balfour would require on this night as he notched the eventual game-winner 4:25 into the contest as he picked up his ninth goal of the season at 4:25.

The score stayed that way until midway through the third period when the Canadians Danny Lepage supplied some insurance as he collected his 17th marker of the campaign to round out the scoring.

Bradley Chenier picked up the lone assist on the play as he raised his league rookie-leading point total to 64.

Savard and the Canadians defensive corps did the rest to preserve his initial NOJHL shutout.

Kirkland Lake first-year netminder Tyler Mazzocato was solid in defeat stopping 30 of the 32 attempts he faced in defeat.
