Senecal shines as Thunderbirds soar past Eagles

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – Zach Senecal scored once at even strength, another via the power play and one more while shorthanded to help the Soo Thunderbirds soar past the rival Soo Eagles 7-2 Friday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at Essar Centre.

Matthew Caruso staked the visitors to the lead 11:35 into the contest on a man advantage effort before Senecal picked up his first of the evening at 15:42 to put the home side up by two.

Mark Tassone then made it 3-0 just 35 seconds later before the Eagles got one back before the frame was complete courtesy of a William Casey effort.

It was more Thunderbirds in the middle session as they tacked on three more to take a 6-1 lead at 40 minutes.

Keenan Eddy got into the act at 3:42, which spelled the end of Eagles’ starter Jack Deines night in favour of Sean Angle, who went the rest of the way.

Angle however was greeted however by late extra man efforts from Senecal and Ryan Mulligan to put the T-Birds in full control.

Chris Lotz connected on the power play for the Eagles 37 seconds into the third before Senecal capped off his hat trick with his shorthanded tally midway through the stanza to round out the night’s scoring.

Caruso, Jake Behse and Matthew Busby chipped in with two assists each for the Thunderbirds.

Brandon Gordon made24 saves to earn the win for the T-Birds.

Deines suffered the loss allowing four against on 13 attempts while Angle saves 13 of 16 in over 36 minutes of relief.
