Soo puts end to Sudbury win streak

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Soo Thunderbirds have put an end to the Sudbury Nickel Barons season-opening winning streak.

The defending Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League champion Thunderbirds struck for three unanswered third period tallies to hand the Nickel Barons their first loss of the season by virtue of a 4-1 victory at McClelland Arena in Copper Cliff.

It was a good start for the home side as Andre Comtois staked Sudbury to the early lead, in what turned out to be the only goal of the opening period as he notched his second of the season at 6:31.

Philippe Cliché levelled the proceedings in the middle frame to send the two sides to the dressing rooms knotted at 1-1 after 40 minutes.

Special teams put the Soo in front for good as Darcy Casola struck on the power play with 8:42 remaining with the eventual game-winner.

Cliché’s second of the night made it a 3-1 game a couple minutes later as the T-Birds notched another man advantage marker while Casola netted another in the late stages to round out the scoring.

Steven Dombrowski turned aside 30 of 31 shots he faced to register his first win of the season for the Soo who pumped 38 pucks on Alex Laino in the Sudbury net.

With the victory the Thunderbirds improved to 5-1-1-1 on the campaign with the Nickel Barons slipping to 8-1 with the setback.

NOJHL action continues Friday on two fronts as the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners travel to North Bay to meet the Trappers at 7 p.m. while the Elliot Lake Bobcats host the Abitibi Eskimos at 7:30 p.m.
