Soo stymies Blind River

SAULT STE. MARIE – Jaren Bellini tallied twice and doled out a pair of assists to pace the Soo Thunderbirds to a 10-2 triumph over the Blind River Beavers in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play Tuesday evening at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

The hometown Thunderbirds were quick out of the gate, grabbing the lead 70 seconds after the opening face-off, with Nathan Hebert notching his eighth of the season.

Three and a half minutes later Sault Ste. Marie added to their cushion as Bellini buried his team-leading 18th of the campaign.

The T-Birds tacked on three more in the middle frame adding a pair of tallies from Eric Hillock sandwiched around a Joey Miller effort to put them up by five.

Special teams allowed Blind River to get on the board as Nathan Hans made it 5-1 via the power play at the 14-minute mark of the period.

Hans then struck again on the next shift to bring the Beavers back to within three.

The Soo power play converted in the final minute of the second as Bellini potted No. 19 overall with his side up a man at 19:11 making it 6-2 entering the third.

A couple of quick markers in the third put the Thunderbirds in full control as Izaak Del Mastro and Anthony Miller helped add to the cushion.

They then wrapped up the night’s offensive outburst adding efforts from Matt Caruso and Joey Ogden to finish things off.

Matt Busby, Joe Miller and Caruso also added two assists apiece to contribute to the victory.

Mario Culina made 11 stops to pick up the win for the Soo who fired 55 pucks on both Zach Mills and Daniel Potter as the Blind River netminders each saw game action.
