IROQUOIS FALLS, Ont. – A solid Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up Saturday at Jus Jordan Arena saw the Iroquois Falls Storm collect a narrow 2-1 triumph over the visiting Elliot Lake Vikings.
Making an early impression in his Iroquois Falls debut, Jaden Lyons, who was acquired earlier in the week from the Timmins Rock, took a back pass in the slot from Connor Desbois and whistled it past Elliot Lake netminder Brogan Colquhoun at 13:34 of the first period.
The Storm then went up 2-0 a couple of minutes later as Carter Jamieson clicked on a power play to supply his initial NOJHL tally, by stuffing in a loose puck during a goal-mouth scramble.
Action in the middle frame saw the Vikings get on the board near the midway mark of the contest when Mason Windsor chipped a backhand by a diving Maverick Fletcher in the Iroquois Falls net.
That marker gives Windsor at least one point in each of his past eight outings.
Moving to the third period, the score stayed the same into the latter stages of the contest.
Getting their goalie out deep in regulation, Elliot Lake pressed hard to tie it and force overtime, but Fletcher held the fort to preserve the close result.
With the win, the Storm move to 6-9-0-0 in the standings while the Vikings dip to 3-8-0-0 with the slim setback.
