LITTLE CURRENT, Ont. – A Tyler Corbett effort proved to be the lone goal of the shootout as the Iroquois Falls Storm slipped past the Elliot Lake Vikings 2-1 in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League neutral site affair Friday at NEMI Recreation Centre.
Elliot Lake got the game’s opening tally, 11:46 into the match-up, with defenceman Braden Vis credited for the marker on an assist from Ryan Daponte.
Answering with a late equalizer, Iroquois Falls drew level, thanks to Andre Cho’s fourth of the campaign, with just 12 seconds remaining in the session.
Second period play saw neither side convert offensively as the two teams hit the intermission still tied at 1-1.
In the third period, as well as the five-minute overtime, the solid contributions of goaltenders Brodie Haylock of the Storm and the Vikings’ Matthew Vahramian kept it at 1-1 through 65 minutes, to send it to extra shots to decide a winner.
There, Corbett was the only one to connect, while Haylock slammed the door shut for his final 53:14 to collect the well deserved victory.
The win sees Iroquois Falls raise their record to 7-15-0-1.
Vahramian’s efforts for Elliot Lake helped his club collect a point in defeat as they went to 4-11-1-3.
