Strong 3rd sends Eskis past Eagles

IROQUOIS FALLS, Ont. – The Iroquois Falls Eskis broke open a one-goal game by striking six times in the third period to help them skate past the Soo Eagles 8-2 Sunday afternoon in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League matinee at Jus Jordan Arena.

Sault Ste. Marie got off to the start they wanted as the visitors notched the lone tally of the opening period when Chris Murphy struck shorthanded 5:39 into the contest.

The home side countered in the second stanza by getting goals from Jordan Picard at even strength and Blake Holowaty, via the power play, to go up 2-1 after 40 minutes.

Iroquois Falls extended their cushion early in the third when Jay Sidhu supplied his fourth of the season 59 seconds into the session.

The Eskis then tacked on two more in rapid succession with Samuel Vigneux and Wade Auger scoring a couple of shifts apart.

Jake Saxton’s sixth of the season got one back for the Eagles at 12:22, but Iroquois Falls finished off their offensive outburst with markers from Shadow Reuben, Dillan Bruce and David Osborne to wrap things up.

Grant Omyer and Josh Dejulio chipped in for the Eskis with two assists each.

Artem Bortovskiy made 38 stops to record the win for Iroquois Falls.

Jack Deines started in net for the Soo and faced 44 shots in the loss.
