Sudbury sinks Mattawa in OT

MATTAWA – A Sheehan Kirkwood marker midway through the first overtime helped the Sudbury Nickel Barons rally past the Mattawa Blackhawks 4-3 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play Friday at Mike Rooden Arena.

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, Mattawa got on the board 4:43 into the second thanks to a David Osborne effort.

The Blackhawks then went up a pair five minutes into the third as Osborne added his second of the night with an unassisted tally.

Sudbury got on the board with 8:06 to go in regulation as Ryan Mooney connected on the power play as he finished off a feed from Yanic Hebert.

The Nickel Barons tied it at 14:05 when Ryan Theriault banged in his 14th goal of the season.

Sudbury would go in front for the first time on the night 28 seconds later thanks to Christopher Rossi.

Mattawa bounced back to force extra time with 2:02 to go as Tyler Broderson added a man advantage effort for his 19th goal in 2014-15.

In the extra session though Kirkwood won it for the Nickel Barons to give his side the second point that was up for grabs.

Kevin Labelle made 19 stops to pick up the win for Sudbury while Josh Horner impressed for the Blackhawks finishing with 53 saves is helping his side earn a point in defeat.
