Sudbury slips past Soo in OT

SAULT STE. MARIE – Bradley Sutton’s goal 2:41 into overtime was the difference as the Sudbury Nickel Barons rallied to edge the Soo Thunderbirds 4-3 Saturday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

Eric Hillock began the scoring for Sault Ste. Marie with 1:19 left in the first frame as he converted on the power play.

Countering, Sudbury tied it with 27 seconds left in the session as Jimmy Roy notched the equalizer for the Nickel Barons.

The Thunderbirds retook the lead with tallies by Joey Ogden and Matthew Mitchell to go in front 3-1 before the five-minute mark of the middle session.

The visitors drew closer with a man advantage effort off the stick of Dylan Callaghan at 18:21 to bring them within one entering the third.

Sudbury forced extra time with 12:11 left in regulation as Christopher Rossi put in the equalizer finishing off the work of Ryan Theriault and Ryan Mooney.

Sutton then won it for the Nickel Barons in OT giving his side the extra point and the road win.

Kevin Labelle made 33 saves to record the triumph for the Sudbury while Brian Kment had 26 stops in defeat for the T-Birds.
