Sudbury stops Powassan in OT

SUDBURY – A Dylan Callaghan power play goal 23 seconds into overtime was the decider as the Sudbury Nickel Barons edged the Powassan Voodoos 4-3 in a Wednesday evening Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest at McClelland Arena.

Sudbury grabbed the lead with the only marker of the opening frame as Matt Neault slammed in his 10th of the campaign at 13:22.

Powassan tied it five and a half minutes into the middle session thanks to Kyle Moore and went in front at 13:07 as Steve Harland picked up his team-leading 22nd of the season via the power play.

Special teams saw the Voodoos go up a pair four minutes later with Bo Peltier supplying his club’s second man advantage marker of the evening.

The Nickel Barons got back in it with tallies 43 seconds apart in the late stages of the frame as affiliate Alex Guido and Ryan Theriault both beat Powassan netminder Matt Young.

After a scoreless third Sudbury won it while up a man early in the extra session as Callaghan redirected the game-winner on a point pass past Young from the top of the crease to give the home side the victory.

Kyle Fransen had a pair of assists for the Nickel Barons including one on the decider.

Jessie Morin made 30 saves to pick-up the win while Young faced 41 shots in helping his team earn a point.
