Sunday sees Rivermen end Thunderbirds winning streak, Eskimos defeat Beavers, Bobcats blank Trappers
SUDBURY – Three games on the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League docket Sunday saw Espanola put an end to the lengthy winning streak of the Soo Thunderbirds while Abitibi bounced Blind River and Elliot Lake blanked North Bay.
ESPANOLA RIVERMEN 3 SOO THUNDERBIRDS 2 (OT) – Corbin Bean scored 2:54 into overtime to propel Espanola past visiting Sault Ste. Marie putting an end to the Thunderbirds’ 11-game winning streak.
Despite the setback the T-Birds have now recorded a point in 12 consecutive contests.
Brennen Dubchak and Byron Sam had the other markers for the Rivermen while Nicolas Tassone and Nathan Hebert countered for the Sault.
Rivermen captain Brad Edwards dished out a pair of assists to aid the offensive cause for his side and Riley Bordin did likewise for the 16-2-0-1 Thunderbirds
Marc Terriault made 26 saves to pick-up the win in net for Espanola, who improved to 11-7 with the triumph.
Brian Kment saw 20 pucks in the OT defeat for his side.
ABITIBI ESKIMOS 5 BLIND RIVER BEAVERS 1 – A three-goal third period broke open a close game as Abitibi skated past Blind River at Jus Jordan Arena.
Erik Robichaud had an impressive effort for the Eskimos tallying three times and set-up the other two to pace his team in the victory.
Ryan Tront and Brady Clouthier also scored for Abitibi with Clouthier also dishing out a pair of helpers.
Brody Wagner made 26 stops to earn the victory between the pipes helping his side improve to 8-7-0-2 on the season.
Francis Desforges had the lone marker for the Beavers in a game that saw Dylan Knox face 35 shots in the loss as Blind River dropped to 4-13 on the campaign..
ELLIOT LAKE BOBCATS 2 NORTH BAY TRAPPERS 0 – In North Bay Etienne Roy kicked out all 39 attempts he saw to post the shutout for Elliot Lake over the Trappers.
Aviv Milner potted the eventual game-winner in the second stanza and Brett Wagner added to insurance in the final frame.
Evan Cormier was equally solid for North Bay in defeat as he faced 40 shots on the night.
With the victory the Bobcats moved to 7-6-0-3 and the Trappers dropped to 6-10-0-3.
NOJHL action resumes Wednesday as North Bay visits Sudbury in a 7:30 p.m. start at McClelland Arena.
