Syrette strikes 3 times as Soo stops Sudbury

SUDBURY – Grant Syrette notched a natural hat-trick by scoring the game’s first three goals to help power the Soo Thunderbirds past the Sudbury Nickel Barons 6-1 Wednesday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at McClelland Arena.

Sault Ste. Marie was quick out of the gate in this one with Syrette finding the back of the net just 49 seconds after the opening face-off.

He then increased the Thunderbirds lead at 11:02 to put the T-Birds up a pair after 20 minutes.

Joey Miller, who drew assists on Syrette’s first two tallies, dished out another helper as the combo clicked again early in the second stanza as he fed his linemate for his third of the night 74 seconds after the start of the middle session.

Special teams allowed Sudbury to get on the board midway through the contest as Bradley Bell connected on the power play to bring the Nickel Barons closer heading to the third period.

It was all Thunderbirds in the final frame however as they put it away tacking on three more goals, including a pair from Nicholas Tassone and a solo effort courtesy of Eric Hillock.

David Radke also had a pair of assists to aid the cause of the winners.

Joel Horodziejczyk turned aside 27 of 28 shots in recording the victory helping his side improve to 7-2 on the season and move back into a first place tie in the NOJHL standings with the 7-1 Kirkland Lake Gold Miners.

Michael Muzyka was pelted with 46 pucks in a losing cause for the Nickel Barons as they slipped to 2-8 overall.

League play continues Friday with three games including a neutral site contest in Timmins between Sudbury and the Abitibi Eskimos.

Also on tap that night sees the Thunderbirds entertaining the Blind River Beavers at Essar Centre and the Espanola Rivermen hosting the North Bay Trappers.

All three match-ups get underway at 7:30 p.m.
