T-Birds Newhouse blanks Express
ESPANOLA, Ont. – Dougie Newhouse turned aside all 33 shots he faced to post his first Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League shutout Saturday as the Soo Thunderbirds blanked the Espanola Express 4-0 at the Regional Recreation Complex.
Sault Ste. Marie started strong in this one getting a pair of special teams’ markers to go up 2-0 after the first period as Gage Stephney struck shorthanded at 11:45 while Zach Senecal connected on the power play with 61 seconds left in the session.
After a scoreless middle stanza, the Thunderbirds added to their lead three and a half minutes into the third compliments of Kaidan McDonald’s second goal of the campaign.
The Soo’s Keenan Eddy iced it at 19:19 to wrap things up.
Ryan Waterhouse chipped in with two assists for the Thunderbirds.
Kyle Alaverdy made 35 stops in defeat for Espanola.
With the result the T-Birds improved to 13-5-0-0 on the year as they move back into first place in the overall NOJHL standings, two points ahead of Cochrane with the Crunch however holding four games in hand.
As for the Express they fell to 4-10-0-1 on the season.
