Thunderbirds double up Express 6-3
ESPANOLA, Ont. – The Soo Thunderbirds saw Zach Senecal tally twice and add an assist to help them double up the Espanola Express 6-3 Sunday afternoon in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League matinee at the Regional Recreation Complex.
Sault Ste. Marie got the early jump on Espanola notching a pair of goals in the latter stages of the first period on markers by Alec Allen and Ryan Waterhouse.
The Express got one back early in the middle stanza thanks to Jason Bednarski’s sixth of the season at 2:20.
Auston Kozluk’s 20th restored the Thunderbirds cushion four and a half minutes later, but Aaron Roschinsky brought the home side back to within one at 17:39 as he too scored for the 20th time this season.
Senecal’s 25th of the campaign 18 seconds into the final frame proved to be the game-winner.
Bednarski picked up his second of the day for Express at 6:20; however the Soo put it away later in the period as Senecal and Sean Emmerson rounded out the scoring.
T-Birds captain Matt Caruso also had a solid game as he dished out three assists in the win.
Dougie Newhouse made 29 saves to record the victory for the Thunderbirds.
Mitchell Jacobson started for Espanola and allowed three against on 16 shots in just under 27 minutes of work while Logan Sawka suffered the setback in relief giving up the final three Soo markers on 35 chances.
