Thunderbirds run win streak to 6 with triumph over Wildcats

ELLIOT LAKE, Ont. – The Soo Thunderbirds got a goal and an assist each from Greg Smith and Ryan Waterhouse, along with a 32-save performance from netminder Brandon Gordon to help them win their sixth consecutive Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League game Sunday as they defeated the Elliot Lake Wildcats 3-1 at Centennial Arena.

After a scoreless first period, Sault Ste. Marie struck twice in the middle session to go up by a pair on efforts supplied by Smith and Gage Stephney, who notched the eventual game-winner.

Waterhouse then made it 3-0 for the Soo five and a half minutes into the third.

Elliot Lake would dash Gordon’s shutout bid with 4:33 remaining in regulation as Mack Caruana collected his third of the campaign for the Wildcats in what turned out to be the night’s final marker.

Mark Tassone dished out two assists to chip in offensively for the Thunderbirds.

Mark Kostiw faced 37 shots in defeat for Elliot Lake.
