Thunderbirds run win streak to 7
SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – The surging Soo Thunderbirds continued their winning ways to begin 2016 as they skated to their seventh consecutive victory and 30th overall Saturday as they defeated the rival Soo Eagles 3-1 in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up at Essar Centre.
The Thunderbirds got going early as Matt Pinder collected his 15th goal of the season three and a half minutes into the contest.
Mark Tassone made it 2-0 five minutes after that as the home side took the two-marker cushion into the intermission.
Down a man, the Eagles pulled to within one at 17:50 of the second as Nate Harris supplied a shorthanded effort to make it a 2-1 game.
However the Thunderbirds countered that with a power play tally off the stick Ryan Mulligan just 38 seconds later in what turned out to be the final goal of the night.
Brendon Gordon was solid for the T-Birds in net making 28 saves to earn the win.
Cam Bruggrabe also turned in a good performance for the Eagles in defeat facing 42 shots along the way.
