Thunderbirds sign forward Matt Caruso

SAULT STE. MARIE — The Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Wednesday that they have signed forward Matt Caruso for the upcoming season.

The 17-year-old Caruso is a Sault Ste. Marie native, who played last year with the Waterloo Wolves major midgets where he led that team in scoring.

In 32 league games with Waterloo in 2013-14, Caruso scored 18 times and doled out 28 assists in 46 games.

He last played locally in 2012-13 for the Soo Thunder where he amassed 70 points on 36 goals and 34 helpers in 54 contests.

“We are very happy to have Matt and he will be a very good junior player,” offered Thunderbirds general manager Kevin Cain on the signing.

“He will add some needed offence to help replace some of the scoring lost with the graduation of Gavin Burbach and Darcy Haines,” added Cain.
