GALLERY: Thunderbirds skate to 4-2 road win vs. Voodoos

POWASSAN, Ont. – A Mackenzie Walkington marker 7:07 into the second period proved to be the game-winner as the visiting Soo Thunderbirds went on to skate to a 4-2 triumph over the Powassan Voodoos Saturday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League inter-divisional affair at the Powassan Sportsplex.

The league-leading Voodoos pressed the pace in the opening frame, outshooting Sault Ste. Marie 11-4 in the session and were rewarded with the night’s initial tally as Gregory Trudeau-Paquet connected for his 17th at 16:05.

Moving to the middle stanza, the Thunderbirds picked up the equalizer at 3:38 off the stick of Brock Santa Maria.

However, Powassan came right back a couple of shifts later to go back on top thanks to a Parker Bowman effort.

The goals kept coming though as Cooper Smyl and Walkington tallied, just 24 seconds apart, to give the Soo a 3-2 lead after two periods of play.

It stayed that way until the final moments of the contest when Avery Rebek skid one into an empty net just before time expired to secure the road victory.

Recently acquired defenceman Dylan Parsons dished out three assists for the Soo.

Shots on net finished 36-30 in favour of the Thunderbirds with Dakota Meyer picking up the win while Owen Say suffered the setback.
