ELLIOT LAKE, Ont. – The surging Soo Thunderbirds tallied twice in each period to capture their eighth Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League win in a row Sunday with a 6-1 decision over the Elliot Lake Wildcats at Centennial Arena.
Tanner Mayne and Spencer Van Tiem staked Sault Ste. Marie to a two-goal cushion after the opening 20 minutes.
The Thunderbirds then tacked on two more in the middle session to add to their lead with Lucas Theriault and Matthew Bazarin both finding the back of the net.
Elliot Lake eventually got on the scoreboard 8:10 into the third on Caleb Minns’ 10th of the campaign to bring the hosts closer.
However, Theriault picked up his second of the evening and 30th of the season at 12:29 before affiliate Brock Santa Maria notched his first NOJHL goal on the next shift to help secure the victory for the Soo.
Thunderbirds defenceman Brady Caruso dished out three assists in the triumph while netminder William Anderson made 24 saves to pick up the win.
Wildcats starter Zion Miceli faced 28 shots in a losing cause.
