Thunderbirds too much for Wildcats

ELLIOT LAKE, Ont. – The Soo Thunderbirds tallied twice in each period to help them defeat the Elliot Lake Wildcats 6-1 Friday night in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at Centennial Arena.

The visiting Thunderbirds gained the upper hand early in the contest getting goals 13 seconds apart from Greg Smith and team captain Matthew Caruso to go up a pair after one.

After David Elford got one back for Elliot Lake 31 seconds into the middle session, Sault Ste. Marie responded by notching two more in the frame to go up 4-1 on markers by Mark Tassone and Austin Kozluk.

The Thunderbirds then put the game away in the third as Keegan Eddy and Gage Stephney both found the back of the net to round out the night’s scoring.

Caruso, Zach Senecal and Alec Allen each supplied two assists for the Soo in the win.

The T-Birds outshot the Wildcats 47-22 on the night with Brandon Gordon picking up the win.

Matt Kostiw suffered the loss in net for Elliot Lake allowing the six against on 41 attempts while Justin Richer stopped all six attempts he saw in nearly 17 minutes of relief.
