Thunderbirds top Blackhawks

SAULT STE. MARIE – Nicolas Tassone notched a natural hat trick to help lift the Soo Thunderbirds to a 7-1 victory over the Mattawa Blackhawks Friday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

Sault Ste. Marie stormed out to a 3-0 lead after one period on markers by Joey Miller, Nicolas Sicoly and Matt Pinder.

After Andy Williams got Mattawa on the board with a power play marker six minutes into the second, Tassone struck three times in succession to put the home side in command of the contest.

Nathan Hebert added one in the latter stages of the match-up to round out the scoring.

Sicoly also chipped in with three assists for the Thunderbirds while Hebert, Joey Ogden and David Radke had two helpers each.

Mario Culina finished with 20 saves to record the win for the Soo who pumped 47 shots on Joe Sheppard in the Blackhawks net.
