Thunderbirds top Eskis 5-3

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – The Soo Thunderbirds used a well-balanced attack getting goals from five different skaters to help them skate to a 5-3 victory over the visiting Iroquois Falls Eskis Sunday afternoon in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at Essar Centre.

Sault Ste. Marie got off to a solid start grabbing a 2-0 lead before the contest was five minutes old on markers by Nick Smith and Jake Reed’s first NOJHL tally.

Iroquois Falls came right back however with two goals of their own just 11 seconds apart courtesy of David Osborne and Jack Speer.

The Thunderbirds countered however before the frame was complete as Mark Tassone notched his seventh of the season.

The Eskis picked up the lone tally of the middle stanza, just 17 seconds in, when Phil Caron collected his second of the campaign.

It stayed tied at 3-3 until the 2:53 mark of the third when Keenan Eddy buried the eventual game-winner to put the T-Birds back in front for good.

Zach Senecal’s team-leading eighth added some insurance three minutes later to round out the scoring.

Jake Behse had a pair of assists to aid the Thunderbirds cause.

The Thunderbirds held a big edge in shots on goal firing 42 attempts on Eskis netminder Artem Bortovskiy while Brandon Gordon made16 stops to record the win for the Soo.
