Thunderbirds top Express 3-1 to remain unbeaten

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – The Soo Thunderbirds (2-0) picked up goals at even strength, shorthanded and on the power play to aid in a 3-1 victory over the visiting Espanola Express (0-1-1) Sunday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at John Rhodes Arena.

Down a man in the first, Jordan Kovacs struck shorthanded at 15:20 as his first NOJHL goal put the Thunderbirds in flight.

Countering quickly, the Express drew level before the opening frame was complete as Zachary Matyasik connected at even strength with assists going to Bradley Brunet and Hunter Halcrow.

An even strength effort off the stick Daniel Bazarin 5:43 into the second session proved to be the game-winner as Sault Ste. Marie took a 2-1 lead to the dressing room after two periods of play.

In the third, the Thunderbirds added some insurance with 13:31 remaining in regulation as Matthew Bazarin potted one during a man advantage to round out the night’s scoring.

Making his NOJHL debut in net for the Soo was Dakota Meyer, who finished with 24 saves to record the win.

Espanola starter Andrew Rocha was solid for his side in defeat making 44 stops along the way.
