Thunderbirds’ Van Tiem commits to NCAA D-III Milwaukee School Of Engineering

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. — The Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League has announced that forward Spencer Van Tiem has committed to attend school and skate with the Milwaukee School Of Engineering men’s program starting in the fall.

The 20-year-old Birmingham, Mich., spent parts of two seasons with the Thunderbirds compiling 15 goals and as many assists in 46 career games with Sault St. Marie.

Van Tiem was also a solid contributer for the Soo in the postseason registering 23 points 32 playoff contests while scoring nine times and helping set-up 14 others.

In the 2019 postseason alone, Van Tiem finished third in team scoring with 16 points in 19 outings helping lead the Thunderbirds to the NOJHL final for the first time since 2016.

Of his 24 career tallies in the NOJHL, seven of them were game-winners.

In heading to MSE, Van Tiem will be joining a Raiders program that competes out of the 12-school National Collegiate Hockey Association.
