Thunderbirds win 4th straight with triumph over rival Eagles

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – Greg Smith had a couple of goals, including the game-winner, and also added an assist to help the Soo Thunderbirds skate to their fourth straight win with a 6-1 decision over the rival Soo Eagles Sunday night in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at Essar Centre.

The Thunderbirds jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one period of play on markers from Mark Tassone and Smith’s first of the evening.

Chris Lutz got one back for the Eagles five and a half minutes into the second, but Nick Smith regained the T-Birds cushion with 53 seconds left in the session.

The home side then put the game away in the third as they tacked on three more to secure the victory.

Zach Senecal’s 15th of the season, during a man advantage opportunity, at 3:27 made it 4-1 while Ryan Waterhouse added to the lead a couple shifts later.

Greg Smith then wrapped things up with a shorthanded goal with 3:05 to go to round out the scoring.

Jake Behse also had a big game as the Thunderbirds defenceman dished out three assists in the victory.

Dougie Newhouse made 17 saves to record the win for the T-Birds while Kade Phipps faced 32 shots in defeat for the Eagles.
