Timmins topped in Cottage Cup opener

COLLINGWOOD, Ont. – The Trenton Golden Hawks (OJHL) racked up six goals, including three on the power play, in the final period to tame the Timmins Rock 7-1 Wednesday night in Day 1 play at the Cottage Cup Showcase preseason tournament at Eddie Bush Arena in Collingwood.

The six-team event, featuring a pair of two 20-minute frames for each contest, saw Trenton open the scoring at 12:34 of the first as former NOJHLer Luciano Supino split the Timmins defence, took a long pass, and darted in alone on a breakaway before making a couple of quick moves to his right and tucking it past Rock netminder Patrick Boivin.

On the man advantage to begin the final frame, the Golden Hawks soared into the Rock zone right off the draw and connected just six seconds into the stanza and saw Jordan Fuller rip one over Boivin’s blocker.

Continuing to press, Trenton tacked on another when an unmarked Jake Laville was left with a tap-in while alone at the top of the crease.

The Golden Hawks extended their cushion a couple of shifts later as Matthew Cato converted off a scrambled draw.

Adding to their offensive outburst the OJHL side picked off a clearing attempt that allowed David Fournier to skate into the right circle and fire a shot into the left corner.

Timmins did get on the board midway through the period thanks to some nice work by Nicolas Pigeon, who fired a high shot that was stopped, but Brady Harroun was right there to knock in a short-range back hand.

Fuller and Fournier then capped off the result with two more power play goals for the Golden Hawks in securing the victory.

Timmins plays twice Thursday in Collingwood as they take on two more OJHL sides, the North York Rangers and Milton Menace at 12:20 p.m. and 3:20 p.m.
