Timmins tops French River

TIMMINS, Ont. – The Timmins Rock got a pair of goals and an assist courtesy of Cory Sprague and two tallies from Cole Gilligan to help them handle the French River Rapids 6-1 Saturday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at McIntyre Arena.

Timmins stormed out to a quick 3-0 lead before the 11-minute mark of the opening stanza with Marcus Blackned opening the scoring before Gilligan tacked on his two.

French River got one of those back at 13:57 of the frame on Gregory Trudeau-Paquet’s team-leading 12th of the campaign.

It was Sprague’s turn in the second for Timmins as he first scored on the power play, then again while his club was shorthanded to put the home side up 5-1 after 40 minutes.

Stewart Parnell capped off a three-point night of his own with the lone goal in the third coming with 18 seconds to go to wrap things up.

Former Rapids netminder Al Rogers made 30 saves to register the win for Timmins in his Rock debut.

Korland Vader saw 47 shots fired his way in defeat for French River.
