Trappers stop Eskimos 6-3

NORTH BAY – Stephen Langford tallied twice and set-up another to help propel the North Bay Trappers to a 6-3 triumph over the visiting Abitibi Eskimos Sunday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at Memorial Gardens.

Abitibi was quick out of the gate in this one as Ryan Tront beat North Bay netminder Greg Dodds just 21 seconds after the opening face-off.

However, the Trappers responded later in the session by scoring three times in a span of three minutes and nine seconds to go up 3-1.

Corbin Bean’s 13th goal of the season tied it at 11:30 followed by Langford’s 12th two and a half minutes later and Samuel Blanchet’s 17th marker of the campaign at 14:39.

Abitibi pulled back to within one early in the second stanza courtesy of a Justin Holliday effort only to see Trevor Hunt and Cole Klippenstein strike back for the Trappers putting them up 5-2 after 40 minutes.

Another by Langford, with this one coming via the power play, at the 8:04 mark of the third all but sealed the outcome.

A man advantage marker by the Eskimos’ Aaron Kerr, with five minutes to go, finished things off offensively on the night.

Carter Horwitz and Tait Seguin both chipped in with a pair of assists to aid the Trappers cause..

Dodds finished up with 19 saves in the earning the victory with Jackson Winkler facing 42 shots in a losing cause.

With the win league-leading North Bay improves to 32-7-3-4 while Abitibi fell to 13-29-0-3.

The Trappers now hold a seven-point cushion over Sault Ste. Marie in the race for top spot with North Bay having two regular season games remaining and the Thunderbirds four.

League play resumes Wednesday as the Sudbury Nickel Barons hosts the Soo in a 7:30 p.m. start at McClelland Arena in Copper Cliff
