Two for Jarecki as Sudbury slips past North Bay

ESPANOLA – August Jarecki scored twice, including the game-winner with 12:03 remaining, to help the Sudbury Nickel Barons edge the North Bay Trappers 3-2 Saturday evening in the final game of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League Showcase at the Espanola Regional Recreation Complex.

The lone tally of the opening stanza also came off the stick of Jarecki at the 8:18 mark of the session.

North Bay pulled even in the tight-checking affair by notching the equalizer early in the middle stanza courtesy of Christian Sgroi at 2:11 to tie things up after two periods.

Five minutes into the third the Nickel Barons went back on top as Bradley Bell fed Jacob Punkari for his third goal of the season.

Jarecki’s second of the evening gave Sudbury some breathing room and they would need it as Howard Yawit struck on the power play to pull the Trappers to within one with just over five minutes to play, as he finished off the work of Duane Wainman and Ryan Demyen.

That’s as close as North Bay would get however before time ran out to conclude the contest.

Martin Jolicoeur chipped in with assists on Jarecki’s efforts to aid the Sudbury offensive attack.

Michael Muzyka turned aside 26 of 28 shots to record the win in net for the Nickel Barons while Evan Cormier made 29 saves in defeat.

NOJHL play resumes Sunday at 7 p.m. as the Elliot Lake Bobcats host the Abitibi Eskimos at Centennial Arena.
