Visiting Thunderbirds blank Canadians 3-0

CHELMSFORD, Ont. – Brandon Gordon turned aside all 23 shots he faced to post his first shutout of the season as the Soo Thunderbirds blanked the Rayside-Balfour Canadians 3-0 spoiling the latter’s home opener Saturday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at Chelmsford Arena.

Matthew Caruso notched what would be the game-winning goal 4:20 into the contest as the T-Birds grabbed a lead that would hold up throughout the night.

After a scoreless middle session, Sault Ste. Marie got some insurance 4:05 into the final frame as Keenan Eddy connected on a man advantage opportunity.

The power play also allowed the T-Birds to round out the scoring midway through the third when Alec Allen buried his first NOJHL goal.

Caruso and Mark Tassone also dished out two assists each to aid the winner’s cause.

MacKenzie Savard faced 36 shots in a losing cause for Rayside-Balfour.
