Voodoos’ defender Schebel heading to NCAA

POWASSAN, Ont. – For the third straight year the Powassan Voodoos are graduating a defenceman to NCAA Division III hockey.
Justin Schebel, who joined the Voodoos in a trade with the Wellington Dukes back in December of 2016, has committed to the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons NCAA Division III program located in Cortland, N.Y.

Schebel, who was the only 20-year-old on the Voodoos roster, recorded one goal and six assists during the 12 game Voodoos NOJHL championship run this spring.

The Brighton, Mich., product contributed one goal and five assists in 27 games during regular season play.

Schebel was a vocal leader and a veteran presence on a young Voodoos blue line this past season.

Schebel really enjoyed his time playing, and winning a championship with the Voodoos.

“The staff treated me with the upmost respect and gave me the tools I needed to be successful,” said Schebel, who had two other NCAA programs courting him in 2017.

“My billets did everything they could to make sure that I was well fed and had a good place to call home. The players welcomed me in with open arms even though I joined the team late and truly made me feel like family. It was a special team that will not be soon forgotten.”

Schebel joins other Voodoos graduating defencemen James Vuillemot in 2015 (Western New England University) and Nicky Grose in 2016 (Utica College) in NCAA D III hockey next fall.
