Voodoos forward Golba heading to U of Wisconsin-Superior
POWASSAN, Ont. — The Powassan Voodoos of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Sunday that forward Daniel Golba has committed to the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellow Jackets NCAA Division III hockey team.
The Depew, New York native produced 14 goals along with 26 assists totalling 40 points in 50 games with the Voodoos in 2015-16.
Golba, traditionally known as a slow starter, eventually found his niche with the Voodoos and became an important part of the team which finished ranked 14th in the nation at the end of the regular season.
It’s really great to see a kid like Daniel get what he came to Powassan to get he played one year with us and he found a way to get A D3 commit now he gets to extend his hockey career for four more years and possibly more,” stated Voodoos Head Coach Scott Wray.
“Wisconsin-Superior is lucky to have him.”
Golba says getting to play at the college hockey has always been his goal since he started playing junior hockey.
“After looking into the school and its hockey program it was almost a no brainer to commit there,” Golba stated about Wisconsin-Superior.
“Not that many players advance to the next level and for me to get this opportunity to further develop my skills while getting a good education means everything.”
Golba joins his billet roommate Nick Grose as the second graduating Voodoos player to commit to a NCAA school. Grose committed to Utica College back in May.
“Playing for the Voodoos this past year gave me a chance to leave home and play for a great organization,” he said.
“Everything from the coaching staff down to the billets made it a great year. It’s something special when two grizzled vets in the ‘NOJ’ (billet bro and I) are committed to schools,” Golba added about his roommate Grose.
“It just goes to show that players advance.”
Golba also credits his Family Advisor Brian McCann with helping in the process.
The Voodoos organization has now have helped five of its players move on to NCAA or Canadian College hockey since the club’s inception in the fall of 2014.
