POWASSAN, Ont. – The Powassan Voodoos got goals from Seiji Martone and Rico Rossi in extra shots to win their first-ever game via the shootout as they slipped past the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 3-2 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play Friday at the Powassan Sportsplex.
Kirkland Lake kicked off the night’s scoring with the lone tally of the first frame on Hunter Foreshew’s 10th of the campaign midway through the session.
Powassan drew level seven minutes into the second stanza as Henry Scott collected his 16th of the season to knot the affair at 1-1 after two periods of play.
Aiden Wagner then put the Gold Miners back in front early in the third only to see Joe Whittet strike with 62 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.
After a scoreless five-minute OT, the shootout was required to determine a winner.
There, both Joshua Maine of Kirkland Lake and Powassan’s Martone converted on their club’s initial opportunities.
After the Gold Miners were thwarted on their second chance, Rossi roofed one on Gold Miners’ netminder Dawson Rodin to put the hosts ahead.
Then Voodoos goalkeeper Joe Vrbetic stymied the final Kirkland Lake chance to finish off an impressive 46-save performance, along with two more in the shootout, to record the win.
Rodin meanwhile faced 25 shots in the setback with his team earning a point in defeat.
