Voodoos soar past Beavers
POWASSAN – The Powassan Voodoos trio of David Sherman, Kyle Moore and Jake Staples combined for a dozen points as they soared past the Blind River Beavers 9-3 Friday evening in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up at the Powassan Sportsplex.
The Voodoos took off seven and a half minutes into the contest courtesy of a Jeremy St. Pierre effort.
Powassan extended their lead at 14:19 as Moore beat Blind River starter Zach Mills.
The Beavers got on the board 74 seconds later with Austin Lamont picking up his club’s opening marker.
Countering, Brendan D’Agostino put the home side back up by two in the final minute of the first to make it 3-1 after one.
The Voodoos came out flying in the second striking three times before the midway mark of the contest to take control.
Sherman notched a pair of power play markers with Michael Silveri adding another during a man advantage and Moore supplying one at even strength.
Up a skater late in the stanza, Nathan Hans connected on a power play with 19 seconds left in the period as he picked up his team-leading 12th tally of the season.
Blind River drew closer early in the third as Matt DaCosta added one unassisted two minutes in.
In the end however the Voodoos added two more markers from Garry Mindus and Silveri in the latter stages of the contest to complete the one-side triumph.
Staples had four assists on the night with Steve Harland dishing out three helpers of his own to aid the Powassan cause as he moved into the league scoring lead with 89 points.
Shots of goal favoured the Voodoos 45-17 with Jack Ondrovic picking up the win and Zach Mills the loss.
