Voodoos stay unbeaten in regulation with triumph over Express

POWASSAN, Ont. – Tomas Yachmenev picked up a pair of goals while affiliate Jesse Kirkby notched his first Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League goal and added two assists Friday as the Powassan Voodoos skated to a 6-1 triumph over the Espanola Express at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Yachmenev put the Voodoos in flight just 31 seconds into the contest as talented forward picked up his fifth marker of the campaign.

Powassan then extended their lead just over 12 minutes later as Ryan Mills scored for a second time with the club in 2018-19 to put them up by a pair.

On the power play early in the second, Espanola got going offensively with Lukas Lyszyk putting the visitors on the board at 4:45.

However, the home side came right back a couple shifts later with Yachmenev collecting another.

The score stayed 3-1 into the back half of the third when Cade Herd notched his league-leading ninth tally with 8:39 remaining to provide some insurance.

Brett Shawna then iced it with five minutes left before Voodoos’ affiliate Kirkby cashed in for his first late to wrap things up.

Powassan captain Eric Allair and Joe Whittet also collected two assists to aid the Voodoos’ cause.

Christian Cicigoi made 28 stops to record the win while Joel Rainville faced 49 shots in defeat for the Express.

With the victory the Voodoos improved to 8-0-1-0 on the year and 17-1-1-1 in their past 20 regular season contests, dating back to last season.
