Voodoos strike late to top Blackhawks

POWASSAN – The Powassan Voodoos rode the strength of three late third period goals to skate past the Mattawa Blackhawks 4-1 Wednesday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League affair held at the Powassan Sportsplex.

This tight-checking contest remained scoreless into the second period before Voodoos affiliate Jeff Jordan put the home side on the board to make it a 1-0 game after 40 minutes.

Mattawa tied it in the final frame as Andy Williams finished off the work of Tyler Brodersen and Tanner Bowditch to level the proceedings at 1-1.

As the two sides traded chances it was Powassan, who broke the deadlock, as David Sherman notched the eventual game-winner with 4:55 remaining in regulation.

Picking up one of the assists on the Sherman effort was Steve Harland, who extended an impressive consecutive game point streak to 24 straight outings, as he recorded his 35th helper of the season.

The Voodoos then iced it late with a pair of empty net goals in the final minute off the sticks of Jake Staples and affilaite Cayse Ton to round out the scoring.

Matt Young made 38 saves to register the victory for Powassan while Josh Horner allowed two against on 34 shots in defeat for the Blackhawks.
