Voodoos win 8th straight with triumph over Eagles

POWASSAN, Ont. – Gary Mantz tallied twice to extend a current Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League-best point streak to 14 to help lead the Powassan Voodoos to their eighth consecutive win, a 4-1 triumph over the visiting Soo Eagles, Saturday evening at the Powassan Sportsplex.

The Voodoos jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one period of play thanks to Tyson Gilmour at even strength at 7:22 and a clutch shorthanded effort from Gabriel Rheault with just 38 seconds left in the frame.

Mantz then went to work in the middle stanza supplying goals No. 14 & 15 on the season to put the hosts up by four entering the third.

In the final frame the Eagles’ Bradley Hofelich put an end to Voodoos’ netminder Nate McDonald’s shutout bid at 5:56 to round out the night’s scoring.

McDonald did make 22 stops to record the eighth straight victory for Powassan while Kade Phipps was busy in defeat seeing 44 shots fired his way.
