Whitcomb wins it for Voodoos in OT over Wildcats
POWASSAN, Ont. – Christian Whitcomb’s first Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League goal will be a memorable one as he scored the game-winner 3:48 into overtime as the Powassan Voodoos edged the visiting Elliot Lake Wildcats 4-3 Monday night at the Powassan Sportsplex.
It took the home side just 44 seconds to open the scoring in the contest as recently acquired defenceman Nicky Grose buried his first of the season for the Voodoos.
Special teams allowed Powassan to go up a pair as Tyler Peters struck on the power play midway through the session, which spelled an early end to Elliot Lake starter Aaron MacKay’s night in favour of Allan Menary.
Answering that, Elliot Lake supplied a man advantage marker of their own before the first was complete as Spencer Allen found the back of the net at 17:23.
With a Wildcats player in the box to begin the middle stanza, the Voodoos capitalized thanks to Nathaniel McLeod 52 seconds into the period.
The Wildcats battled back from there tacking on a pair of tallies to knot the score at 3-3 after 40 minutes on markers off the sticks of Artur Terchiyev and Troy Button’s first NOJHL goal.
After a scoreless third period, Whitcomb won it in overtime as the defenceman’s shot beat Elliot Lake netminder Menary to secure the two points for his side.
Jake Staples had two assists for Powassan in the victory, including the decider.
Garrett Forrest made 27 saves to record the win for the Voodoos.
Menary suffered the loss in relief facing 31 shots in defeat for the Wildcats helping them pick up a point in the contest. MacKay allowed two against on six attempts in 9:40 of work.
