Wildcats double up Nickel Barons 4-2

ELLIOT LAKE – Spencer MacLean tallied twice, including the game-winner, while Cole Hepler doled out three assists as the Elliot Lake Wildcats doubled up the Sudbury Nickel Barons 4-2 Friday night in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest at Centennial Arena.

After a scoreless opening period, the visiting Nickel Barons got on the board first thanks to an unassisted effort from Jacob Bonin that eluded A.J. Smith in the Elliot Lake net at 4:18 of the second.

Battling back, the Wildcats struck three times before the middle stanza was complete on goals supplied by Adam Baxter, Shane Woolsey and MacLean.

MacLean made it 4-1 4:07 into the third with Sudbury’s Brett Whitehead adding the final marker of the evening a minute and a half later to round out the scoring.

The victory was the 35th of the season for the for the first-year Wildcats with Smith finishing with 31 stops in earning the decision.

Kevin Labelle was solid despite the defeat for the Nickel Barons as he was peppered with 50 shots in the the setback.
