Wildcats roll over Beavers

ELLIOT LAKE – The Elliot Lake Wildcats defencemen duo of David Chiarelli and Nathan Campbell combined for seven points to help propel their side past the Blind River Beavers 9-2 Friday night in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League encounter at Centennial Arena.

The first period saw Elliot Lake press the attack throughout peppering Blind River starter Braddock Baalerud with 21 shots, but only come up with one goal in the stanza off the stick of Shane Woolsey at 9:18.

The Wildcats continued to attack in the middle session and were rewarded with two more markers to go up by three as D-men Chiarelli and Campbell connected 36 seconds apart to make it a 3-0 game with half a contest to play.

Blind River got on the board at 11:34 of the second as Nathan Hans took a feed from Beavers netminder Zach Mills, who had replaced Baalerud, and buried his 10th of the season past Tristan Hanna in the Elliot Lake net.

Two minutes later however the home side went back up by three as Nate Sepeda connected on the power play on what turned out to be the final goal of the period.

The Wildcats then put the game away in the third tacking on five of the six markers scored in the third to win going away.

Quick strikes three minutes apart by Connor Scott, Matt Pollard and Alec MacKenzie made it 7-1 before Hans added another for the Beavers at 7:49.

Elliot Lake added two more to complete the romp as Jason Wilson and Cole Helper both found the back of the net to wrap things up offensively.

In all 16 different Wildcats picked up at least one point on the night, including goaltender Hanna who registered and assist and also recorded the victory in net making 11 saves.

Baalerud and Mills faced 61 shots in defeat for Blind River.
