IROQUOIS FALLS, Ont. – The Kirkland Lake Gold Miners got a goal and three assists from Benjamin Armatage to help them rally past the Iroquois Falls 5-3 Saturday in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League preseason opener at Jus Jordan Arena.

Iroquois Falls started strong, jumping out to an early edge as Ben Sherwin and Alex Chewanish were credited in finding the back of the net.

After Armatage put the Gold Miners on the board during a two-man advantage late in the first period, Justin McKnight extended the Storm lead moments later with a shorthanded marker.

Pulling to within one deep into the middle stanza, Noah Woodward brought the visitors closer with a power play effort at 19:11.

Building on that, Kirkland Lake’s Tyler Sweat tied it in the final frame, then Jonah McIndoo notched the eventual game-winner midway through the session.

Capping off the come from behind victory was Woodward, who scored into an empty net, in the final minute, to round out the scoring.

Shots on goal favoured the Gold Miners by a 42-32 count with Braydon Garnhart getting the win and Alexis Mongrain suffered the setback.

The two clubs are scheduled to complete a home-and-home set tomorrow in a 4 p.m. start at Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.
