POWASSAN, Ont. — A young scoring star on the Powassan Voodoos of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League has committed to Providence College’s NCAA Division I hockey program for the 2029-30 season.
Alexandre Saulnier, a second round pick of the OHL’s North Bay Battalion in the 2026 OHL Priority Selection, joined the Voodoos full-time in October and in six games, he has three goals and six assists, totalling nine points.
He was also named one of the NOJHL’s Rogers 3 Stars of the Week on Monday for a four-point weekend which also included a shootout goal in a 5-4 shootout win over the Soo Eagles on Saturday night in Powassan.
Saulnier is thrilled with the news about his future but his priority is his current play in the NOJHL and the OHL.
“I’m honoured and thrilled about the opportunities in my future, but for now, I’m focused on getting better and contributing to the Voodoos and Battalion success,” said the 6’3″ forward from Ottawa.
“It’s been great being part of the Voodoos and I see us doing some great things this season, like going to the Centennial Cup.”
Chris Dawson, Voodoos general manager, is not surprised with the news.
“He’s like a young Eric Lindros was with the Philadelphia Flyers as an 18-year-old with his mix of size, strength and scoring touch,” said Dawson about the former U16 AAA Ottawa Jr. 67’s forward.
“Closer to home, I’d say he also resembles a young Justin Brazeau when he played as an affiliate with the Voodoos and then became a dominant OHL player with the Battalion. Alexandre is on that same kind of path.”
Dawson also went on to add: “I think this is proof once again that the NOJHL is a great developmental league.”
The Providence College Friars are members of the 11-school Hockey East Conference.
