Cochrane crunches Mattawa

COCHRANE – Cody Gratton had a goal and three assists to help propel the Cochrane Crunch to an 8-2 triumph over the Mattawa Blackhawks Friday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the Tim Horton Event Centre.

It was a solid start for the Crunch as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one period of play on markers by Liam Hurley, Gratton and Ryan Gruszka.

Henry Yawit put the Blackhawks on the board at the 40-second mark of the middle frame only to see Reed Gregory restore Cochrane’s cushion just over a minute later.

Mark Spong brought Mattawa closer at 3:20, but Dustin Cordeiro and Aaron Carmichael countered to make it 6-2 after 40 minutes.

The Crunch then put the game away in the third on efforts by Gregory and Cordeiro, who both notched their second markers of the night.

Aviv Milner chipped with a pair of assists to aid the offensive cause.

Matt Young had 49 stops to secure the victory for Cochrane as they improved to 4-1 early in the campaign.

Joe Sheppard was pelted with 62 pucks in a losing cause for Mattawa as they remain winless after six road games at 0-6.
