Dombrowski, Thunderbirds blank Nickel Barons

SUDBURY – Soo Thunderbirds goaltender Steven Dombrowski turned aside all 25 attempts he faced while Brandon Warmington had a goal and as assist as part of a 69-shot barrage inflicted by his club as they went on to shut out the Sudbury Nickel Barons 4-0 Wednesday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at McClelland Arena.

All the offensive production Sault Ste. Marie would require came 2:18 into the contest as Warmington fed Gavin Burbach for the game-winner while their club was enjoying an early power play opportunity.

Derek Battagin’s 11th tally of the season increased the Thunderbirds lead to 2-0 before the opening frame was out.

Joey Miller put the visitors up three with the only marker of the middle stanza.

Rounding out the scoring was Warmington, who found the back of the net in the final minute of play.

The shutout was Dombrowski’s third of the season moving him into a tie for the league lead in that department as he came away victorious for a 12th straight decision.

Alex Laino was solid in the Sudbury net despite the loss finishing the night with 65 saves overall.

With the victory the T-Birds improved to 30-9-3-3 on the campaign while Sudbury slipped to 28-16-0-1.
