Elliot Lake sinks Sudbury in 2nd OT

SUDBURY – An Adam Baxter goal 10 seconds into the second overtime saw the Elliot Lake Wildcats pull out a 4-3 victory over the Sudbury Nickel Barons Wednesday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at McClelland Arena.

Elliot Lake began the scoring just past the seven-minute mark of the opening frame as Chris Ordoobadi finished off the work of Jason Bednarski and Tanner Bowditch, who drew assists on the play.

Sudbury used the power play to level things up at 7:54 of the second courtesy of Ryan Mooney’s first Nickel Barons tally.

A couple minutes later the home side took the lead when Jacob Bonin supplying the marker for Sudbury.

Special team allowed the Wildcats to tie it at 2-2 prior to the second intermission as Mick Tourangeau struck shorthanded with 80 seconds left in the stanza.

After August Jarecki put the Nickel Barons back on top nine minutes into the third, Elliot Lake forced extra time with 6:05 left in regulation with Spencer MacLean adding the equalizer with during a man advantage.

After a first five-minute OT solved nothing, Baxter won it for the Wildcats early in the second extra session with the two teams skating three players aside.

A.J. Smith was solid in net for Elliot Lake making 45 saves on the night to record the victory while Kevin Labelle faced 35 shots in a losing cause in which the Nickel Barons did pick up a point.
