Elliot Lake upends Mattawa

MATTAWA – The Elliot Lake Wildcats got two goals apiece from Adam Baxter and Shane Woolsey in an 8-1 romp over the Mattawa Blackhawks Saturday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at Mike Rodden Arena

Baxter opened late in the opening frame and then added another early in the second.

Jason Wilson, shorthanded, and Nathan Campbell at even strength also supplied markers in the middle session to put the visitors up by four after 40 minutes.

The Wildcats then put the game away in the final frame tacking on four more to make it 8-0 thanks to a pair by Woolsey and singles from Tanner Bowditch and Cole Hepler.

Mattawa would eventually dash Allan Menary’s shutout bid with 5:42 to go with Hayden Hickey connecting for the Blackhawks to round out the scoring.

Kevin Miller dished out three assists to aid the offensive cause for the winners.

Elliot Lake held a large edge in the shots on goal department firing 50 pucks on Mattawa’s Joe Sheppard while Menary turned aside 17 of 18 for Elliot Lake to pick up the victory.
