Elliot Lake’s Brett Wagner named Gongshow Gear player of the month for January
SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Saturday that Brett Wagner of the Elliot Lake Bobcats has been named the Gongshow Gear Inc. player of the month for January.
In 10 games played during the opening month of 2014, the veteran forward in his last season of Jr. A hockey scored 11 times and dished out nine assists for the Bobcats.
Included in his efforts were a trio of deciding tallies highlighted by a shorthanded game-winner Friday evening in double overtime as Elliot Lake upended the Espanola Rivermen 3-2.
That marker was his league-leading eighth man-down effort of the season which not only leads the NOJHL, but is also the second most of any skater in the 128-team Canadian Junior Hockey League.
On the 2013-14 campaign to date the native of Centennial, Colo., is fourth in league offensive production with 65 points heading into a Saturday evening road contest vs. the front-running Soo Thunderbirds.
Wagner sits second in goals scored with 34 while his seven total game-winners trail only Abitibi’s Brady Clouthier’s nine as that duo are now both in the top 10 in CJHL in that department.
Honourable mention for January player of the month honours went to forwards Samuel Wilbur of the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners and Gavin Burbach of the Soo Thunderbirds.
